Metrics and Analytics: lj 2

Chapter 6 of the textbook "Social media communication: concepts, practices, data law and ethics" by Jeremy Harris Lipschultz was an excellent read that goes over the concept of how social media data gets collected, analyzed, and presented. When reading chapter 6, there were many concepts and topics that were covered in this chapter that reminded me of the reading "We are data" by John Cheney-Lippold. With analytics, the textbook goes over how websites like google incorporate tracking on a page with then provides data on the sources of web traffic. With this tracking implemented, they identify popular searches they content creators can focus on some words and what to avoid. Twitter also has was of gathering data, and many of the data on twitter is open and accessible. In the textbook, it states how "there are obvious measures, such as number of followers, number of retweets, and replies."

With knowing how google and social media collect data as well analyze it, it made me consider on how careful I should be when looking up certain things on google and what I post on social media. Whether you know it or not, every click you do to access a website is tracked. In a professional sense, It made me more aware about how I should present myself in a online setting so that I don't post anything that might make certain job interviewers not see me as a fit for the job on the spot. Even if other users on a social media platform can't see your profile, there's no such thing as a pure private experience on the internet.

  1. Hi Larin,
I agree that this chapter did remind me of our previous article "We are Data." We are truly. being exposed to the truths of the internet and how we are being tracked. I also think the chapter is showing me that I must be more mindful of the things I share on the world wide web. Nothing is private and as we continue on in the course, we will learn more on how our data is being utilized.
