We are data: lj2

The introduction of "We are data" by John Cheney-Lippold was a very insight reading that will educate the public about how the internet will take in data of any information you put out in the internet. As the reading says, "We also live in a world of ubiquitous surveillance...". Most of the actions or activities we do on the internet has the capacity to be seen, recorded, analyzed and stored in some corporations databank. It is also important to know that even the most simple web search from your own smart phone can generate "a lengthy record of new data.". The data that gets recorded can include your location via GPS, the time and day you searched, even your phone's own operating system and IP address.

"We live in what legal scholar Frank Pasquale has termed a black box society." A black box society is term that defines how the algorithm that collects our data and also determine our place in the world without our knowledge. Reading the introduction gave me a grand insight to how I use social media, and the internet in general.  With the amount of time I put in social media and the internet, it would only affect my usage of social media in a professional capacity very minimally, as I never truly put out much personal information out there on the internet (that isn't just my name of date or birth). With the ethic, there is a lot of factors that makes it a problem, to privacy, net neutrality, or who has access to all this data. It's difficult to lay out but I do recommend that to reduce the amount of data that is stored and analyzed, you must be caution of what exactly you want to put out in your social media.

Overall "We are data" by John Cheney-Lippold is a informal read about the data you input goes around in the internet. I also recommend an article "What is internet ethics" which also discusses the ethics of internet privacy, I will provide the link below.
